Mayr, Ernst (Walter)
(n. 5 jul. 1904, Kempten, Alemania).

Biólogo estadounidense nacido en Alemania. Obtuvo un Ph.D. en la Universidad de Berlín y emigró a EE.UU. en 1932. Mientras era curador del Museo Americano de Historia Natural (1932–53) (N.Y., EE.UU.), escribió más de 100 artículos sobre taxonomía aviaria. Desde 1953 hasta 1975 enseñó en la Universidad Harvard. Sus primeros estudios sobre el proceso de evolución de las especies y las poblaciones fundadoras lo transformaron en un líder del desarrollo de la teoría moderna sintética de la evolución. En 1940, Mayr propuso una definición de las especies que tuvo gran aceptación y condujo al descubrimiento de algunas especies desconocidas hasta entonces. Entre sus obras influyentes figuran Systematics and the Origin of Species [La sistemática y el origen de las especies] (1942) y The Growth of Biology Thought [El desarrollo del pensamiento biológico] (1982).
